The World's Gone Quiet

All the thoughts in my head

Month: June, 2016

The news headlines read:

4-year-old, fatally shot

By his 6-year-old brother, who got his tiny hands on a glock

And our eyes just skim right over the page, without blinking

It’s sickening that this is the world we live in, this world we created

Where these actions are so common they become white noise in the background of our daily lives

I want to take society by the shoulders and scream “Open your eyes!”

One by one we will kill each other off

And we will only have our own ignorance to blame for our destruction.

This is the way the world ends

Not with one bang,

But with multiple.

Hear me

I have a thousand things I want to say to you

And all I ask is that you put your ear close to my lips

So close that every breath tickles your neck

This is all I ask of you

Because even though I may have a quiet voice

That many people fail to hear

I sure do have a lot to say.

The gentle touch of your sin-stained fingertips

Leave little marks across my sensitive skin

And the intoxicating feel of your lips against mine

Leaves a desire in my soul that only you can satisfy

Deep down I know that what we are doing is wrong

But can it really be that wicked if it helps me sleep at night?

The saddest part

The saddest part

Isn’t when you are sitting in the bathtub, fully clothed

And shaking with rage

While your tears softly splatter on the tile

No, the saddest part

Is when somewhere along the cycle of regrets and mistakes

You grow distant from the pain

Until one day, you’re lying on the ground, staring up at the ceiling

Knowing that your heart should be throbbing

Wishing that you had the energy to scream

But feeling like your body is gently being pulled apart at the seams

And while it’s all happening, you’re slowly floating away from your own life

Looking down on the pathetic body laying crumpled on the floor

With a dead look in its eyes

Yes, the saddest part

Is when you become so accustomed to the constant heartache

That you grow numb to it.

My downfall

If I could take all of the burdens off of your shoulders

And place them onto mine

I would do it in a heartbeat for you

And I would go about my life balancing this world on my back

With a strained smile on my face

If it meant you could live without pain

And I think that it will eventually bring about my downfall, my fatal flaw

My Achilles heel.

The mountain man

I see a faint light in the distance

Where up on a mountain, a single-room hut is illuminated by a gas lamp hanging on the door

I imagine a grizzly mountain man living up there on his own

Does he look down on our town with envy?

I wonder if he dreams about leaving his isolation

And joining our civilization

But maybe he fears of being different

In our town of crisp-white shirts and Cadillacs

People might spot the dirt under his nails

And turn up their surgically perfect noses

But maybe I have it all wrong

Maybe he looks down on our town with pity

Because even though we are surrounded by people

We are the ones who are truly alone.

Tied to you

You know you have a hold on me

And your ties have left permanent burns around my neck

You pull me to my knees

When you notice I have too much slack

I dream about the day when I finally gather my strength

And cut the rope that binds me to you

I can’t wait to experience what it’s like to truly breathe

Without you restricting me.
